Social Roles and Social Participation is the second volume of the comprehensive academic reference work titled Research Instruments in Social Gerontology. Co-edited by David J. Mangen and Warren A. Peterson, this text was published on November 15, 1982, by the University of Minnesota Press. 

The book was created to address the growing need for accurate, standardized social measures to study aging populations in the United States. As the elderly population grew, researchers, clinicians, and program evaluators required explicit conceptual tools to analyze behaviors and design public programs.
