Grand Canyon History

Grand Canyon of the Living Colorado is a 1970 conservation-focused paperback published by the Sierra Club and Ballantine Books. Edited by environmental historian Roderick Nash with photographs by Ernest Braun and a foreword by legendary Sierra Club leader David Brower, the book celebrated the unspoiled wilderness of the Canyon.
The book was originally conceived as part of the Sierra Club's advocacy campaign to protect the Grand Canyon from being dammed. It combines stunning color photography with essays written from the perspective of backpackers and river runners to demonstrate what would be lost if proposed dams were constructed in the national park.
The publication serves as a poignant time capsule and a landmark of environmental literature, capturing the physical and spiritual value of a free-flowing Colorado River. Because it has been out of print for decades, you can primarily find vintage copies through collector and secondhand marketplaces
